American Sign Language (ASL) - Beginner & Intermediate
Interested in learning American Sign Language? Whether you're completely new to ASL or looking to build on your existing skills, this class offers a welcoming and engaging environment for learners of all ages.
Students will learn the fundamentals of American Sign Language while gaining an introduction to Deaf culture and the Deaf community. Instruction focuses on developing basic receptive (understanding), expressive (signing), and conversational skills using everyday vocabulary, common phrases, and introductory ASL grammar. Lessons are taught through real-life situations and interactive activities, giving participants plenty of opportunities to practice signing with others.
Both Beginner and Intermediate levels are offered. During the first class session, everyone will meet together before choosing the level that best fits their experience and comfort with ASL.
Youth participants are welcome! Children who attend should be able to read independently and must be accompanied by a parent or another participating adult.

Paula Olson
American Sign Language Facilitator
Paula is an native ASL signer who is deaf and has resided in Alexandria for the last six years with her husband,her daughters, dogs and a kitten. She has had experience teaching American Sign Language classes and currently is a Deaf Mentor with Lutheran Social Services. Paula also works for the Alexandria school district as an American Sign Language Facilitator. She looks forward to sharing ASL with the community and spreading awareness about deaf culture.
Kimberly Pickar
ASL Interpreter
Kimmy is an ASL Interpreter who has been signing for 10+ years . Though she is new to the Alex area, she is not new to signing or helping others learn ASL. With multiple years assisting with the High School ASL Classes in Bemidji, along with interpreting in different fields (community and education) this has truly become a passion for her. Currently, Kimmy works as an ASL Interpreter for Alexandria Public Schools.
