This workshop helps attendees discover five keys to unlocking a retirement where they could have confidence in their ability to live out their dreams.

If you are 55 or older, save money on your car insurance premiums and become a better driver! Minnesota law requires that insurance companies offer a 10% reduction on auto insurance for three years if you complete a state-approved defensive driving course taught by professional, certified instructors. This course is held via zoom - no driving or test required. At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion to provide to your insurance agent.

The AARP® Driver Safety course is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for drivers 50 and older. Improve your driving skills during this course, and if you're 55 or older, get a 10%, three-year discount on your personal auto insurance. By taking the driver safety course, drivers learn research-based safety strategies that can reduce the likelihood of having a crash. They include: Minnesota state-specific driving regulations; proper use of seat belt, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in vehicles today; the importance of eliminating distractions, such as eating, smoking, and using a cellphone; learn ways to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time; and understand the effects of medications on driving. Instructors are trained volunteers with AARP®. If you are an AARP® member, please choose the discounted member option when registering.

Do you know how a basic backup of pictures is done? How about what a web address is and how to use it? Do you have a working knowledge of what a browser is, saving documents, and email attachments? The instructor will define and demonstrate other very basic terms from A-Z. Some terms include search box, PDF file, scrolling, wi-fi, folders, and operating systems (Windows). If you are a recent learner and struggle with basic computer terms, this class is for you!

You work hard to care for others and to take care of yourself. When you are not able to do so, who will? How will they? How can you protect and provide for those you care for, yourself and causes you value? How can you be best assured of the implementation of your plans in a timely and cost efficient manner? What needs to be done after incapacity or death when implementing the plan? Learn about Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives, Wills, Trusts and related advanced planning tools. Understand what exposure your estate has to taxes, long term nursing care costs, other liabilities or expenses and how to minimize that exposure. Questions are encouraged and individually addressed where possible.

Learn how to e-mail, forward, reply, and send attachments. You will see how e-mails are organized and deleted. Work with other features, such as starred, drafts and sent. Become acquainted with the writing tools, e-mail folders, and creating links to direct others to your area of interest and websites you have visited. In addition, we will look at contacts and how to use them. All these features will be clearly demonstrated in Zoom.

Is a change of housing in the future for you or a loved one? Hosted by Douglas County Senior Services along with Social Services and Horizon Public Health, you will learn about some of the choices in the Alexandria area (senior apartments, 55+ housing communities and assisted living communities). After a short informational session at the Public Works Conference Room (526 Willow Drive), we will board a school bus and visit 2-3 senior housing sites. The bus will have wheelchair accessibility. Sites will be finalized about two weeks before the tour date. Depending on the site, the tour may include walking longer distances.

This workshop will help attendees gain a basic understanding of how to identify and overcome transition obstacles, protect assets, and develop a strategy to smoothly transition their cherished place to maintain family harmony.
